From design to reliable operation

Insights

Incorporating operational requirements from the engineering stage helps prepare an orderly handover of facilities. The key is to connect design decisions, information and verifications.

Operations take shape in the drawings too

A facility can fulfil its process function yet still make equipment difficult to inspect, maintain or replace. These conditions are better understood when operations and maintenance teams are involved in defining the design.

The review considers access, working space, component removal routes and utilities. Rather than adding a final review, operational requirements are incorporated into discipline development and the comparison of options.

Handover by system, with clear boundaries

Construction packages do not always align with the systems that need to be brought into service. Recognising this difference allows documentation, tests and dependencies to be organised before handover.

Mechanical completion, pre-commissioning and commissioning must be linked to acceptance criteria. At each stage, it must be clear what is available, which interfaces remain outstanding and what information supports the recorded status.

What to prepare during engineering

Consistent technical information

Equipment and system identification must remain consistent across drawings, lists, manuals and records. When the design changes, updates must extend to the affected documents and retain the revision history.

Maintenance and spare parts

Criticality reviews and manufacturers' recommendations inform maintenance and spare parts requirements. The selection is assessed against service conditions, supply lead times and the consequences of unavailability.

Tests and outstanding items

Protocols link requirements to verifications. Outstanding items are classified and assigned to responsible roles, with clear criteria for determining which ones affect system handover.

Document close-out that supports operation

As-built documents and test records must be easy to locate and link to the asset. Handover is more useful when the organising criteria are agreed before documentation is produced.

The intended result is a clear information base for operation, maintenance and the assessment of later changes. A facility continues to evolve; its information needs to evolve with it.
